Common questions
Visa Bulletin, in plain English
What is the Visa Bulletin?
The Visa Bulletin is a monthly report from the U.S. Department of State. It lists the cutoff “priority dates” that determine when an immigrant-visa or green-card applicant can move forward, by category and country of chargeability. CaseRadar reads it for you and shows where your date stands.
What does “Current” (C) mean?
“Current” means there is no waiting line for that category and country this month — every priority date is eligible to act. “Unavailable” (U) means no numbers are being issued at all this month, regardless of priority date.
Final Action Dates vs. Dates for Filing — what’s the difference?
Final Action Dates are when a green card can actually be issued. Dates for Filing are when you may submit your application paperwork, which can come earlier. USCIS announces each month which chart to use for adjustment of status.
What is a priority date?
Your priority date is your place in line — usually the day your I-130 or I-140 petition was filed (or your PERM labor certification). When the bulletin’s cutoff reaches your priority date, your date is “current.” It’s printed on your I-797 receipt notice.
How often does the Visa Bulletin change?
A new Visa Bulletin is published once a month, usually a couple of weeks before it takes effect. Cutoff dates can advance, hold still, move backward (“retrogress”), or become unavailable. CaseRadar can email you the moment your category changes.
Is CaseRadar affiliated with USCIS or the government?
No. CaseRadar is a private tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by USCIS or the U.S. Department of State. It re-publishes public bulletin data in a friendlier form; the official bulletin at travel.state.gov always controls.
Is this legal advice?
No. CaseRadar provides general information from public data, not legal advice, and using it does not create an attorney-client relationship. Whether you qualify for any benefit or faster path is a legal question for a licensed attorney.
